Tanzania Awaits Sh1 Billion Dutch Aid For Runway Feasibility Project

Posted on : Wednesday, 17th August 2016

Dar es Salaam — Talks between Tanzania and the Netherlands are going on for the later to grant Sh1.2 billion (euros 500,000) to the later to finance a feasibility study for construction of a two-kilometre runway at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) says it has submitted a proposal to the government of the Netherlands which "is willing to provide the grant for the study".

TAA is awaiting an approval from the Treasury.

JNIA has the capacity of receiving 30 flights an hour and the number is expected to double by 2020.

"Unless the situation is improved, the airport will have long queues of aircraft while others will be forced to delay landing or takeoff," TAA acting director general George Sambali told The Citizen.

According to him, the second runway is expected to be built where currently small aircraft park.

However, international aviation laws stipulate that all small planes to have their own airport. "That is the amount we need for the particular stage but the donors may decide otherwise," said Mr Sambali. If that amount is released soon the feasibility study is expected to start in January next year and will take a year to complete. He explains that JNIA has only one large runway.

"As the aviation industry is growing we are supposed to build another big runway. Since this will require a large area, a lot of money is needed and people have to be compensated. So, instead of that we will build a two-kilometre runway that will not require large amount of money.
